Lisa The Warrior is an educator, entrepreneur and a cancer coach
Lisa Middleton is an educator, a warrior and a cancer coach
At the age of 9, Lisa was given only six months to live, endured a year of grueling chemo, radiation and physical therapy to learn how to walk again. With tremendous courage and resilience, Lisa would beat cancer.
After graduating elementary school, middle school and high school early despite missing months of school, she went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from St. John’s University. Immediately thereafter she pursued a Master’s degree at Adelphi University in Elementary Education .
She not only taught hundreds of kindergarten and first grade students, but a disproportionate number of her students accelerated passed their age based grade to a higher grade.
Lisa was promoted co-director at Middleton’s Day Care Center and First Grade. She would later open an after school and tutoring program to improve students social skills, provide safety and supervision and boost students grades in school. A few year later, Lisa was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and while expecting a second child. This was especially difficult because she lost her sister Michelle Middleton-Bond Esq. to breast cancer at a young age.
About Me
Remaining optimistic, Lisa didn’t let her second battle bring her down despite the fact that the cancer had already begun moving to her lymph nodes. She had to make the very tough decision to either expose her unborn baby to harmful radiation and treatment or wait and risk the spread of the cancer until after the baby was born. Lisa optioned to wait, and was blessed with a beautiful and healthy daughter.
Lisa is also working on her book entitled, I Am Built for This: A Guide to Getting Through Cancer. Her book encourages others battling with cancer by giving them tips on self-care both physical and mental rejuvenation, exercise, bringing awareness to others who think cancer is a disease for certain people and a host of other vital information.
Lisa is the recipient of numerous awards including Sophia’s Choice Award, and Flowers of Hope Award The award acknowledges those warriors who beat cancer. She also does motivational speaking engagements. She has volunteered her time motivating children with cancer at the Ronald McDonald’s House by donating books. Currently Lisa resides in Queens with her husband and is the proud mother of two beautiful children.

Wellness Wednesday: I Am Built For More...
Lisa is the very definition of a warrior queen.
She created a four point principle to help others conquering cancer:
Protect
The cancer journey and diagnosis may induce a variety of psychological emotions including: depression, anger, anxiety, fear, helplessness, sadness and the list goes on. Protect your mental space at all costs. This also means staying away from toxic people who drain you emotionally, physically and mentally.
Listen
Always stay in tune with your body. It can give you signals that something might be wrong. Seeing a doctor for any unusual or news lumps is crucial. Also listen out for the latest data on your specific type of cancer and get involved in studies and trials. The more you know, the more you can fight and increase your chances of survival. Get the facts and educate yourself by learning all you can. Having another set of ears is an added benefit to you. If possible, don’t travel alone on this journey.
Advocate
Advocate for yourself or bring an advocate with you to your doctor visits. If you don’t feel comfortable with your doctor, you have the right to move on. Family and friends can also assist with the research and help you with your rights if or when you become too overwhelmed. They can act as your support team.
Nutrition
Nutrition can play a huge role in your recovery. Stay away from foods high in cholesterol, sodium, sugar, processed food, red meat and include more berries, vegetables, fatty fish, and beans. You’ve only got one body and one life.
